Orthokeratology (OrthoK), also known as cornea refractive therapy, is a process that uses custom made retainers to temporarily reshape the cornea contour. It can be used to correct vision problems, such as myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism. Orthokeratology is an alternative for those who want to say farewell to contact lenses and eyeglasses, along with those who prefer not to undergo eye laser surgery, like LASIK.
It’s also a great option for children with myopia! Retainers are worn at night while sleeping and removed in the morning to reveal excellent vision. As an added bonus, it will slow down the progression of myopia!
OrthoK is a very specialized type of fitting, and it’s best to choose an optometrist who specializes in this area. Dr.Marie has been fitting orthokeratology retainers has been for the past 10 years!
When you choose OrthoK a few key tests must be performed. Dr. Marie will examine the health of the outside of the eye, measure the length of the eye and map your cornea with a Topographer. The topography of the eye shows Dr. Marie exactly how your cornea is shaped. All the information collected during your consultation is then used to design your custom retainer lenses (OrthoK Retainers).
Throughout your initial fitting period, your OrthoK specialist (Dr. Marie) will monitor your corneal health and the effectiveness of treatment. At certain times your retainer lens fit may be modified to achieve your goals.
Orthokeratology can produce results in a surprisingly short period of time. The length of treatment to achieve your goals can vary from patient to patient.
*Please note: This treatment needs to be monitored by the doctor and will require several appointments throughout the year.
